What are the different areas involved in eyelid surgery?

A blepharoplasty consists of removing excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids which immediately improves the patient's appearance and in many cases also their visual field.

Additionally, in the lower eyelids the main focus lies on fat removal and fat displacement with the purpose of taking away the eyelid bags developed over your lifetime.

A full treatment, known as a 4-lid blepharoplasty, treats both upper and lower eyelids and can really change somebody's life as it dramatically improves their physical appearance as well as a person's self-esteem.

How can I treat my droopy eyelid or ptosis?

An often under-recognised lower position of the upper eyelid, called a ptosis or droopy eyelid, can also be treated simultaneously. A droopy eyelid usually occurs with ageing, but can occur in adolescents as well, often as a result of wearing contact lens.

This, and all other aspects of the eyes and their surrounding tissues will be evaluated when visiting us for an intake blepharoplasty consultation with Doctor Rob van der Veen, to offer you the best possible solution that fits your specific needs.

What does our blepharoplasty treatment usually consist of?

blepharoplastie

Step 1: The pre-operative consultation

Before the operation, an appointment must be held with the oculoplastics surgeon to perform an examination of the ocular area and eyelids.

A diagnosis that determines the different points that will be corrected.

Step 2: The surgery

Aesthetic eyelid surgery takes about 30 minutes and is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation, but can be perfectly performed under local anesthesia alone. New techniques have made for a very short down time, ranging from a few days to a week maximum.

Note that lower eyelid bag surgery and ptosis surgery can be performed without any external incision and scar, as it is performed with a hidden incision on the inside of the eyelid.

Step 3: The postoperative

Blepharoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis: the patient can go home at night. New techniques have made the recovery time very short, from 7 to 10 days at most.

Making it a truly minimally invasive procedure with maximum result.

Recovery after a blepharoplasty

As we have previously mentioned, these are minimally invasive procedures with short recovery times.

However, it is important to take steps to ensure a quick recovery and there are some simple steps you can take. To heal quickly, avoid:

  • Strenuous activity and swimming for a few days,
  • Smoking, as smoke can irritate your eyes,
  • Wearing contact lenses or rubbing your eyes.

Our answers to the most frequently asked questions about blepharoplasty

Is blepharoplasty painful?

In majority of cases, eyelid surgery is not painful. However, it may cause some discomfort. In all cases, effective analgesics are prescribed.

How long is the recovery time for blepharoplasty?

These are minimally invasive procedures with short recovery times. Although it is not always the same for everyone. It usually depends on the type of skin and the activity that a person performs. As a general rule it is usually between 10 and 12 days.

How to apply eye makeup after blepharoplasty?

It is advisable to wait a minimum of two to three weeks before using makeup after blepharoplasty and, in the case of mascara, it is necessary to wait an additional week. However, it is important to individualize each process as it depends on the state of the scar and the skin surrounding the eyelids. After this time you can use make-up as normal, as long as everything has evolved correctly.

When can we see the results of a blepharoplasty?

Two weeks after the operation, the patient will notice the results which will be completely visible. But, after two or three months, you will be able to see the definitive results on your face, thus obtaining a younger look and without drooping eyelids.
