Alopecia, baldness... what actually are they?
Usually, 85% of our hair is in the growth phase and only 10% in the loss phase. We can therefore lose 50 to 100 hairs a day without it being a cause for concern. The problem is when hair loss accelerates. This is known as alopecia (loss of hair on the body), or baldness when hair loss is localised on the forehead, above the temples and at the top of the head.
Two thirds of men are affected by baldness at some stage in their lives and one third will become bald. It is a very common problem, partly linked to androgenic hormones and consequently most present in men. Other causes of baldness include stress, illness, thyroid or blood disorders, nutrient deficiencies or skin conditions.
Women can also be affected by baldness, but this is more likely to be a distributed loss of hair that very rarely leads to complete baldness.
Baldness in itself is not serious, but it can have important psychological consequences, especially for young men and women, for whom hair holds important social and personal meaning.
What are the treatments for balding?
Medical treatment can be offered to slow down the progression of alopecia but does not stop the process.
The best treatment is minoxidil 2% lotion, applied twice a day directly to the base of the scalp on the affected areas of the scalp.
If this solution is not satisfactory, men have another option, finasteride, which is taken orally.
However, patients must be aware that these treatments have significant side effects (loss of libido, depression, local redness, irritation, etc).
PRP treatment is a non-invasive therapeutic method that aims to inject the protein-rich platelets contained in the blood into the scalp. It improves the appearance of the hair, slows down hair loss and promotes hair growth by stimulating the hair follicle cells.
This treatment can be used alone or in combination with other medical treatments for hair loss or hair transplants.
Hair transplantation is a procedure that requires the removal of follicular units (grafts composed of 1 to 4 hairs).
This extraction of micro or mini grafts can be done in two different ways:
- By removing each follicular unit individually from the donor area that has been shaved. This technique is called FUE.
- By cutting a strip of the donor area of 10 to 30 cm and then extracting the grafts. This technique does not require shaving and is called FUL or (long hair FUT).
The results of the graft are immediately visible and then PRP treatment can be used to strengthen the grafted hair, further improving the results.
Who can benefit from hair treatments for alopecia?
Hair loss treatments are available for both men and women.
PRP treatment is often considered when:
- Alopecia is mild to moderate
- Hair is thinning or partially bald
- Hair growth needs to be stimulated following pregnancy
- Following a hair transplant
Hair implants are considered when:
- The alopecia is more extensive (the skin on your head is visible)
- The alopecia has been suffered for a long time

Once the diagnosis has been made, they will be able to suggest solutions according to your needs: taking a dietary supplement, PRP treatment to slow down hair loss and stimulate hair growth, hair transplants, etc.
