What is a varicose vein?
A varicose vein of the legs is a permanent dilatation of a vein of the superficial venous system of the lower limbs. This vein is deformed, twisted and abnormally elongated.
They are very frequent in women and are usually associated with a feeling of heavy legs. It is the most common sign of venous circulation problems.
What are the symptoms of varicose veins?
Varicose veins appear as a network of thin, bluish blood vessels in the legs (spider veins) or as large, protruding veins in the crease of the knees or thighs.
They may also be accompanied by the following symptoms:
- feeling of heavy legs ;
- impatience: unpleasant sensations in the legs that are only relieved by movement;
- dysesthesia: burning, electric current sensation that often accompanies impatience;
- itching ;
- cramp-like pains, especially at night;
- edema.
What are the causes of spider veins on the lower limbs?
Varicose veins are caused by loss of elasticity of the vein walls and enlargement of the veins due to the effect of aging, or by damage to the venous valves, the small flaps in the leg veins that prevent blood from flowing back down.
Certain factors also favor the appearance of varicose veins in the legs:
- Pregnancy
- Hormonal changes
- Prolonged standing
- Excessive heat
- Overweight
- Sedentary lifestyle

How does laser and pulsed light treatment work to eliminate varicose veins in the legs?
Laser vascular treatment is currently the best solution for varicose veins of the lower limbs. Its objective is to occlude the varicose vein by applying energy converted into heat thanks to the light applied on the vein.
If you wish to have your treatment at Turó Park Clinics, a first consultation will be made to establish a treatment plan and a budget. This first appointment will also allow us to eliminate any possible contraindications to the treatment.
On the day of the treatment, the doctor will put on protective goggles and pass the laser over the areas to be treated, following the veins. A session lasts an average of 15 to 20 minutes.
As for sensations, the session is not painful but may be slightly uncomfortable. You will feel warmth in the skin during the treatment, as well as a tingling sensation when the laser is triggered.
As for the result of a Nordlys™ laser session on the legs, the small vessels will disappear totally or partially in about ten to fourteen days. If you need another session, it is necessary to wait at least 4 weeks.

Other methods to eliminate varicose veins
There are also other methods to eliminate varicose veins, but they usually have more disadvantages.
Varicose vein surgery consists of removing the diseased superficial veins while preserving the healthy veins. There are different techniques: crossectomy, stripping and phlebectomy, depending on the characteristics of the varicose veins and the patient.
The postoperative course is usually simple, requiring some analgesic medication, a brief postoperative containment and prevention of the risk of phlebitis.
