Do you need an STD test in Barcelona?
The term “sexually transmitted diseases” (STD) or “sexually transmitted infections” (STI) include dozens of conditions caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites that can be transmitted during sexual intercourse. These infections do not always cause symptoms; therefore, screening is essential to prevent further disease transmission.
Different types of tests are used in the screening and diagnosis of each specific STI; including clinical examination of the genitals, local swab samples, urine analysis with culture, or blood sampling. By all means, Turó Park Medical Center is fully equipped to screen for the most common STDs/STIs and does so in a confidential and reliable way, so please don’t hesitate to make an appointment now to schedule your screening.
What are the main Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) ?
There is a large variety of STIs/STDs that present different characteristics and different symptoms. Among the most frequent are the following:
- HIV or AIDS virus
- Hepatitis B
- Lymphogranulomatosis venereum (LGV)
- Genital herpes
- Human papillomavirus (HPV)
- Mycoplasma infections, caused by different bacteria
- Vulvovaginal mycoses
Some of these diseases are relatively minor but can still lead to complications such as maternal-fatal transmission, infecting the new-born in the event of pregnancy. However, others are more serious such as AIDS or hepatitis B. It is important to note that all STIs weaken your mucous membranes and considerably increase the risk of contamination by the AIDs virus.
When should I take an STD test?
Most of the time, STD screenings are taken at the patient’s request due to the appearance of symptoms, such as:
- Urinary problems
- Unusual vaginal secretions
- Irritation, burning or tingling in the genital area
- Pain during sex
- Pelvic pain
- The appearance of small pimples or warts on the genitalia
- Intense fatigue or nausea
Screening may also occur after unprotected sex of any type, even if you have no symptoms.
Finally, as part of pregnancy monitoring, some screenings are mandatory, such as syphilis and hepatitis B, others are strongly recommended (HIV).
What happens in the case of a positive result?
If your STD test comes back positive, your doctor at Turó Park Medical Center will explain the results and the different treatment options available to you.
In the case of HIV seropositivity, a combination of lifetime treatments (triple therapy) can be considered in order to block the evolution of the disease. However, it is not possible yet to eliminate the virus entirely.
To treat syphilis, antibiotics are usually prescribed that have a very good prognosis for recovery. Sexual partners of the patient should also be treated.
Antibiotics are the most common treatment for trichomonas vaginitis, gonorrhoea, lymphogranulomatosis venereum and mycoplasma infections.
Genital herpes cannot be entirely eliminated. However, treatment can relieve pain and limit the duration and intensity of the herpes virus in the event of its resurgence.
In the majority of cases of hepatitis B, it will heal spontaneously but in some cases it may become chronic.
