Vasectomy

Kidney colic

Kidney colic is particularly painful and can lead to serious complications if accompanied by other symptoms that may require emergency hospitalisation.

Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction affects about 30% of men over the age of 40, but it is often diagnosed late, as it is still often not experienced well by patients.

Urinary Incontinence

It affects nearly 1 in 3 people during their lifetime. While the condition can occur at any age, it is more common among older adults

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer most commonly occurs after 50. It is slow growing and can often be removed completely or managed effectively if diagnosed before it spreads outside the prostate.

What is urology?

Urology is a medical specialty that deals with disorders of the urinary tract in men and women, as well as dysfunctions of the genital and reproductive systems in men (prostate, penis, testicles).

It is also a surgical specialty as all urologists are fully trained urological surgeons.

As a reminder, the urinary system includes:

  • The kidneys, which are the body's filters.
  • The ureters, which carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
  • The bladder, which stores and empties urine via the urethra. The urethra passes through the prostate gland and then through the penis to the outside of the body.

When to consult a urologist?

Generally, it is the general practitioner who refers the patient to a urologist when the patient presents one of the following disorders:

  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Urinary leakage
  • Traces of blood in the urine
  • Pain in the testicles
  • Prostate problems or erectile dysfunction

Of course, a patient can also take the initiative to consult a urologist if they suspect a problem with the urinary tract, such as burning, blockage or discomfort when urinating, urine leakage or erectile dysfunction.

Similarly, a consultation with a urologist is recommended from the age of 50 as part of the screening for prostate cancer.

What does a urological surgeon treat?

The urologist treats a wide range of conditions related to the urinary tract:

  • Infections,
  • Lesions,
  • Malformations,
  • Cancers of the urinary tract (especially prostate), etc.

Your health is our priority.

Our team of urologists treats urinary tract disorders in women and men.

What is the role of a pediatric urologist?

Some urological diseases appear in early childhood and can lead to serious health problems. The role of a pediatric urologist is to diagnose and treat these diseases to prevent them from causing serious consequences.

Urological treatment in children is mainly concerned with the following conditions:

  • Female or male urinary incontinence, also known as bladder weakness
  • Urinary tract malformations
  • Hypospadias and testicular ectopia
  • Pain and trauma to the testicles and external genitalia
  • Testicular torsion
  • Micropenis
  • Phimosis requiring emergency circumcision
  • Irritating urinary tract infections
  • Acute or chronic cystitis in young adolescents
  • Vaginal infections
  • Changes in urine colour that may be due to kidney failure.

Children often have excellent healing and regenerative abilities. Many illnesses can therefore be cured quickly and without complications by pediatric urology treatment.

What happens during a consultation with a urologist at Turó Park Clinics?

After a thorough interview to understand the patient's situation, the urological surgeon will perform a clinical examination:

  • In men, a digital rectal examination will be performed to palpate the prostate,
  • In women, it will be a vulvovaginal examination.

Additional examinations may also be necessary to confirm the diagnosis. This is particularly the case for pelvic ultrasound, bladder fibroscopy, debimetries and urodynamic assessments.

To prepare for your consultation, remember to bring along the results of any tests you may have had before coming. As a general rule, it is better to avoid urinating before the urology consultation as you may have to urinate in a special container during your examination.
