What are the parathyroid glands and why do they fail?

Although their name sounds similar to the thyroid, the parathyroid glands have a completely different function. They are four small glands, about the size of a grain of rice, located in the neck next to the thyroid gland.

Their mission is vital: to regulate calcium levels in the blood, bones, and nervous system by producing parathyroid hormone (PTH).

The problem arises when one or more of these glands grow excessively (usually what we know as a parathyroid adenoma) and begin to produce PTH uncontrollably. This is known as primary hyperparathyroidism.

The Dangers of High Calcium (Hypercalcemia)

It’s not just a number on a lab report. An excess of calcium or PTH in the blood can cause:

  • Chronic fatigue, tiredness, and muscle weakness
  • Bone pain or signs of premature osteoporosis
  • Recurrent kidney stones
  • Difficulty concentrating or "brain fog"
  • Reflux or abdominal pain
  • Hypertension (HTA) and cardiovascular impact

Hyperparathyroidism

Despite being a condition that is sometimes underdiagnosed, it is much more common than people think. The statistics are clear: over the course of their lifetime, 1 in 100 people will develop a tumour in one of their parathyroid glands.

This incidence increases significantly in a specific profile: 1 in 50 women over the age of 50 will suffer from this condition.

In the vast majority of cases, it is a parathyroid adenoma: a benign (non-cancerous) tumour that nevertheless behaves in a "rebellious" manner. This tumour continuously produces excess PTH hormone, raising calcium and/or PTH levels in the blood and giving rise to primary hyperparathyroidism.

Our Approach: Minimally Invasive Surgery

Unlike traditional approaches, our philosophy focuses on minimal aggression and maximum safety. Current parathyroid surgery allows all patients to benefit from advanced techniques.

Treatment Benefits

Thanks to the expertise of Dr. Constanza Ballesta we perform surgeries characterised for:

  • Small incisions: Excellent aesthetic results, almost imperceptible over time.
  • Light anaesthesia: Reducing recovery times and associated risks.
  • Quick recovery: Most patients return to their normal lives in record time.
  • Recovery rate above 98%: A percentage that can only be achieved by highly specialised surgeons.

Comprehensive Diagnosis

For surgery to be successful, the preliminary study must be extremely rigorous. At Turó Park Clinics, we integrate,

Below you will find some of the diagnostic tests we perform

Diagnostic Test Function Benefit for the patient
Complete analysis Confirm parathyroidsim Accuracy in the initial diagnosis
4D/High resolution Ultrasound Location Guide for minimal incision
Sestamibi Scintigraphy Location Identify overactive glands
Intraoperative PTH Real time confirmation Confirm healing before closing

Post-operative care: What to expect after surgery?

One of the biggest concerns is recovery. By using minimally invasive techniques, the post-operative period is very manageable.

postoperatorio cirugia paratiroides 1

First Hours

You will feel almost immediate relief from the "brain fog". More balanced calcium levels will have a revitalising effect.

postoperatorio cirugia paratiroides 2

Pain management

The pain is comparable to that of a mild pharyngitis and can be easily controlled with common painkillers.

postoperatorio cirugia paratiroides 3

Scarring

We use transparent intradermal sutures that we remove to reduce inflammation. After a few months, the scar is camouflaged by the natural folds of the neck.

Temporary Supplements

During the first few weeks, we may prescribe calcium and vitamin D while the other three glands (which were "dormant") become active again.

Frequently asked questions

Is parathyoid surgery dangerous?

As with all surgery, there are risks involved, but in the hands of an experienced endocrine surgeon, complications (such as damage to the vocal cords) are extremely rare (less than 1%).

How long is the surgery?

A minimally invasive parathyroidectomy usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on how easy it is to locate the affected gland.

How long is the recovery process?

Most patients return to their normal activities within 3–7 days. Relief from symptoms such as fatigue is usually almost immediate once calcium levels normalise.

Will I have to take medication forllowing the surgery?

In most cases, after removing the diseased gland, the other three healthy glands take over. Calcium and vitamin D supplements are usually only prescribed temporarily during the first few weeks.

Is the scar very noticeable?

No. We make the incision in one of the natural folds of the neck, which makes it practically invisible after a few months of healing.

What happens if I don't get the surgery?

Primary hyperparathyroidism does not go away on its own. Without surgery, calcium will continue to damage your bones (causing severe osteoporosis) and your kidneys, as well as increasing your cardiovascular risk.

Will I loose my voice after surgery?

This is one of the most common concerns. Thanks to the use of precision technology and our team's in-depth anatomical knowledge, damage to the vocal cords is extremely rare.
