Do you or your child have molluscum and want to get rid of it in Barcelona?
Molluscum contagiusum is a very common skin lesion, especially in children, caused by a virus of the pox virus family. They are painless and benign, but can be mildly itchy when redness appears around them and are, as the name suggests, highly contagious.
Molluscum regresses spontaneously within 1-2 years but can also be treated to prevent the spread of molluscum contagiosum and to reduce self-infection. If you or your child suffers from this condition and would like to have it removed, do not hesitate to make an appointment with one of our dermatologists in Barcelona.

What is molluscum contagiosum infection?
Molluscum contagiosum infection manifests itself as small, rounded bumps on the skin, which look like small, smooth, translucent or pinkish beads about 2-8 mm wide. Molluscum contagiosum is often confused with warts.
The molluscum rash often affects a single part of the body, although it is possible to develop several areas of molluscum contagiosum. It can also appear anywhere on the body except on the palms and soles.
How is molluscum transmitted?
The molluscum contagiosum virus is transmitted by direct skin contact with another infected person, after an incubation period of two weeks to six months. It is therefore particularly common among children who attend public swimming pools, nurseries and schools, or contact sport classes.
It should also be noted that molluscum can also affect adolescents and adults with sexual transmission when the location is on the pubic or genital area.

How can the molluscum contagiosum virus be prevented?
Few preventive measures are really effective in preventing molluscum contagiosum from forming.
However, if your child already has molluscum it is important to take certain steps to avoid the spread of the virus and self-infection:
- Wash your hands with soap after touching molluscum contagiosum
- Do not scratch them
- Avoid sharing towels with other family members
Finally, although molluscums disappear spontaneously after a few months, it is also possible to treat them to avoid re-infection or contamination of another family member.
What are the possible treatments for molluscum?
As we have just seen, most lesions regress spontaneously within 1 to 2 years, and may persist for 2 to 3 years. However, treatment of molluscum contagiosum is indicated for cosmetic reasons or to prevent transmission.
The most common treatment options include:
Indicated for children with few molluscums, this method consists of burning each lesion, under local anaesthesia. However, if too large an area is burnt it may leave scars.
