What causes these symptoms?
We are born with a limited number of eggs that will produce oestrogens throughout our fertile years, and as we get older they are used up until they are completely depleted. This significantly reduces the levels of oestrogens in our body, which will cause the symptoms and changes of this stage.
It is the period prior to the complete cessation of menstruation and can be very variable from one woman to another. It is characterised by the alternation of normal cycles with the absence of symptoms, with abnormal cycles in duration and quantity of menstruation, which is the result of the start of the defective function of the ovaries.
During these abnormal cycles it is common to feel irritable, with frequent mood swings, hypersensitivity and breast tension, tiredness among others.
During this period there is still a risk of pregnancy and it is necessary to use a contraceptive method.
How are the symptoms?
The symptoms that may appear during this period can be divided into 3 groups according to the time they appear.
Short Term:
- Disturbances of sleep, mood, memory and concentration.
- Intense tiredness, joint pain, dryness of the skin.
- Suffocation, tachycardia and cramps.
- Weight gain and loss of muscle mass.
Medium Term :
- Genito-urinary menopausal syndrome, characterised by the appearance of genital dryness and pain during sexual intercourse with or without urinary incontinence and other pelvic floor disorders.
Long Term :
- Increased cardiovascular risk.
- Increased risk of dementia.
- Osteoporosis and increased risk of fractures.
