What are the different breast surgery treatments?
There are three general categories of cosmetic surgery performed on the breasts (also called mammoplasty):
- breast augmentation,
- breast reduction,
- breast lift.
For a variety of reasons, the most performed cosmetic surgery in the world is breast augmentation. This procedure increases the size of the breasts using various methods, but exist other breast surgeries for other needs. It is even possible to complement one surgery with another.
Breast augmentation surgery can modify the shape, volume and position of the breast, while respecting the desired symmetries and proportions.
When should I get cosmetic breast surgery?
This decision is yours, and yours alone.
Breast augmentation may be used when breasts are sagging, underdeveloped, or simply too small for the patient's taste. This procedure regains volume and shape most often performed with breast implants.
If you are considering a cosmetic procedure, please do not hesitate to get in contact with our plastic surgeon. Make sure you see a highly-qualified, trained surgeon.
What are the different ways of performing breast augmentation?
- Shape: more natural or the round shape
- Texture: the texture can be smooth or rough
- Composition: an implant is filled with silicone gel or saline solution.
This method of breast augmentation uses autologous fat, in other words, one's own fat, and offers lighter and more natural results.
Fat transfer surgery begins with liposuction to extract fat from areas such as the love handles, stomach or thighs. The removed fat is then processed before being injected into the patient's breast. Breast lipofilling allows the patient's figure to be reshaped and the volume of the breast to be increased.
To perform this operation, the patient must have localized fat deposits. It is important to note that part of the fat injected into the breast will be naturally reabsorbed by the body. This procedure allows you to gain approximately one cup, and is ideal for correcting asymmetry, for example.

How is cosmetic breast augmentation usually performed?
Step 1: Preliminary consultation
The surgeon will talk to you before the operation about your desired final results. During this consultation, the following is established:
- The patient's motivation.
- Medical history
- A physical examination
- Type of anaesthesia: local, local assisted or general.
- A pre-anaesthesia check-up is also performed.
The patient will determine their desired size by fitting trial implants.
Step 2: Surgery
The procedure varies according to the type of cosmetic breast augmentation treatment but generally the operation is as follows.
- making a cut (incision) in the skin next to or below the breast
- positioning the implant – either between your breast tissue and chest muscle, or behind your chest muscle (as discussed during your consultation)
- stitching the incision and covering it with a dressing
The operation takes between 60 and 90 minutes.
Breast implants are made up of a silicone shell filled with either saline (a salt water solution) or silicone gel. On the other hand, and as mentioned, breast lipofilling involves the removal of fat deposits from other parts of the body.
In general, all breast augmentations are minimally invasive procedures.
Step 3: Postoperative care
Breast implant surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis: the patient can go home the same day.
After the operation, the patient must wear bandages to support the breasts and limit swelling. You'll be given pain relief if you experience any discomfort afterwards.
During this period, it is recommended to sleep on the back and not on the side to prevent the implant to rupture. Sporting activity, exposure to intense heat or cold is not recommended.
Pain and discomfort can be relieved with medication prescribed by the surgeon.
Are there risks associated with breast surgery?
It is a relatively straightforward procedure. As with any surgery, some uncertainty and risk are expected. It is best to talk to your surgeon about your concerns and expectations. Seek consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon.
There are various risks to consider:
- Thick, obvious scarring
- The rupture of saline implants – may cause small tender lumps (siliconomas) leading to an implant removal
- creases or folds in the implant
- the implant rotating within the breast, resulting in an abnormal shape
- nerve problems in the nipples – they may become more sensitive, less sensitive, or completely numb; this can be temporary or permanent
As with all operations, there is a small carried risk of bleeding, colts, infection and allergic reaction. This is why it is of utmost importance to consult a highly qualified and experienced surgeon.
