What are the different breast surgery treatments?
There are three general categories of cosmetic surgery performed on the breasts (also called mammoplasty):
- breast augmentation,
- breast reduction,
- breast lift.
It is possible to complement one surgery with another.
Breast lift surgery is a procedure to raise and reshape the breasts by removing excess skin and reducing the size of your areola. Breast lifts are often paired with a breast augmentation procedure, to achieve a larger cup size as well as a desired position on your chest.

The principal reasons for getting a breast lift are:
- To reverse the effects of aging
- Following pregnancy and breastfeeding
- After weight gain or loss
- Breasts have started to sag or droop
Many women use temporary solutions such as breast lift tape, exercises to lift breasts or non surgical breast lift ideas, however these are temporary and often don't achieve the desired final result.
How is cosmetic breast lift surgery usually performed?
Step 1: Preliminary consultation
The surgeon will talk to you before the operation about your desired final results. During this consultation, the following is established:
- The patient's motivation
- Medical history
- A physical examination
- A pre-anaesthesia check-up is also performed
- You’ll be marked by the surgeon in the standing position to determine the new lifted position of the nipple on your breast.
The patient will determine their desired final result at this point. If they are pairing this procedure with breast augmentation, they will determine their desired size.
Step 2: Surgery
Breast lift is carried out under general anaesthetic. Therefore, you'll be asleep during the operation.
Generally, the operation involves:
- A small incision around the areola, extending down the front of your breast, from the bottom of the areola to the crease
- The surgeon will lift and reshape your breasts, removing any extra skin to give your breasts a firmer appearance
- Afterward, the surgeon will move your areolas to the correct position on the new breast shape
- Finally, the surgeon will close the incisions with stitches, sutures, skin adhesives, or surgical tape.
Step 3: Postoperative care
Post surgery, you'll have dressings on your breasts. After the operation, the patient must wear a surgical support bra for two to three weeks following.
Your breasts may be swollen and sore for a few weeks after your surgery. Pain and discomfort can be relieved with medication prescribed by the surgeon.
During this period, it is recommended to sleep on the back to encourage complete healing. Sporting activity, and exposure to intense heat or cold is not recommended.

Are there risks associated with breast lifts?
It is a relatively straightforward procedure. As with any surgery, some uncertainty and risk are expected. It is best to talk to your surgeon about your concerns and expectations. Seek consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon.
There are various risks to consider:
- Thick, obvious scarring
- nerve problems in the nipples – they may become more sensitive, less sensitive, or completely numb; this can be temporary or permanent
- As with all operations, there is a small carried risk of bleeding, colts, infection and allergic reaction.
This is why it is of utmost importance to consult a highly qualified and experienced surgeon.
Scarring
It is most likely that you will have scars around your nipples.
You may also have a vertical scar running down your breast and a horizontal scar across the crease. This depends on the type of surgery you have so it is best to ask your surgeon before operation.
Scars are usually red for the first 6 weeks, but most fade over time and should be invisible under normal clothes, bras and bikini tops.
It is possible to find products to help reduce scarring, as well as treatments.
